Two readers from each of the three important manufacturers competed for the test victory: The German Tolinos, the Kindles from Amazon from the USA and the pocketbook devices from Switzerland play the main roles in the local eBook reader market. Other manufacturers have given up or are only selling very few copies of their devices. The Amazon Kindle and the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, the Tolino Page 2 and the Tolino Shine 3 and the Pocketbook Basic Lux 2 and Pocketbook Touch Lux 4 models made it into the test field.
Accessories for e-book readers
- eBook reader test: there are no bad devices!
Great: All tested eBook readers offer good features, are properly processed and have a backlight. This ensured that the test results were very close together. However, you should not reach for the first eBook reader you come across, but think carefully about buying a model. Because the technical details cause some significant differences between the various Tolino, Kindle and Pocketbook readers. In addition, with some models, you bind yourself to the respective provider. For some bookworms this means more convenience, for others, it is a restriction.

For lazy wipers: The Pocketbook Basic Lux 2 can only be controlled by buttons.
The displays hardly differ in their image quality: all six tested eBook readers rely on the tried and tested eInk technology. They always show texts and illustrations crisp and sharp and without annoying reflections – even in bright sunlight. In a dark environment, you simply activate the display lighting built into all test candidates. With five models this can be adjusted continuously; The Tolino Shine 3 offers even more comfort: its so-called Smartlight automatically changes its color – in the morning the screen glows with a cool bluish tinge, and during the day the tone changes to reddish. This should relax the eyes while reading and ensure a more peaceful sleep if you are reading in bed beforehand.

Ebooks are the best
eBooks can be bought in bookshops online – or on Amazon. It makes no difference in terms of price because digital books are also subject to fixed book prices in this country, so they have to cost the same everywhere. Whoever gives preference to Amazon when shopping has to be careful: only the in-house Kindle readers can handle the digital books of the online giant; eBook readers from other manufacturers cannot do anything with the special Amazon format! Consequence: If you want to buy from a German chain like Thalia and Hugendubel or in the online shop of the trusted bookstore around the corner, you should grab a Tolino or pocketbook. These manufacturers rely on widely used standards such as the EPUB format.
