Sony’s PlayStation 5 or Microsoft’s Xbox Series X – who will win the next console era? Everything is currently open. Sony has already revealed and shown some details about the PS5, such as a lot of hardware specifications and the brand new DualSense controller. As part of an unveiling event on June 11, 2020, the group presented the new console and provided further information. But some questions remain unanswered: What does the PS5 cost? When does she come? What can she do?
PS5: Germany launch on November 19th
Finally, there is clarity: The PS5 will go on sale in Germany on November 19, 2020 – and thus in time for Christmas. Numerous games will be available for the PS5 at the start. However, you have to wait until 2021 for more titles. It is unclear whether the PS5 will pile up at retailers on November 19 or whether there will be a run on a limited offer.
Sony has long kept a great secret about the selling price of the PS5. Fans and connoisseurs reckoned with a price of 500 to 600 euros, especially since the business magazine Bloomberg, citing insiders, estimated the production costs for the PlayStation 5 at 450 US dollars (approx. 415 euros). And with that, the colleagues from the USA were not bad: In Germany, the PS5 will be available at prices from 399.99 euros. The slimmed-down digital edition is available for this. The “normal” PS5 is over the counter for 499.99 euros.
PS5: Two models are coming
After a 75-minute trailer show, the design of the PlayStation 5 could finally be seen at the unveiling event in mid-June 2020, the corresponding video can be found above. Well presented: the outlines of the console are formed from a kind of digital ball pool. Finally, you can see a chic white device with a futuristic design, blue light elements, and black accents, or better said: two at the same time, because at the end of the year Sony will bring a variant with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive and one without. The so-called digital edition should be a bit cheaper. Microsoft is already pursuing the same strategy with the driveless Xbox One S All-Digital Edition – and in the future with the Xbox Series S.
PS5: This is what the console looks like lying down
Amazon shows the PlayStation 5 lying down – and that looks better for some eyes. The two PS5 models are vertical in the trailer. However, images can already be found on the Internet that shows the console lying down. Amazon also advertises them in its online shop. Sony has experienced a bit of malice for the design of its new console on Twitter.
Some users found the PlayStation 5 to look like a Wi-Fi router, a slice of ice, or an office building when standing. But even when lying down, the PlayStation 5 fits seamlessly into the cityscape of futuristic cities.

PS5: design in black?
Sony has not yet revealed whether the new console will also be available in a black version in the future. In the video that Sony showed along with the sales launch and price announcement, the console was only shown in white. However, that doesn’t detract from the creativity of the fans. There is already a concept video showing the PlayStation 5 with a stylish black case. In the forum of the user “BarrBarr” also shared a photo of a promo picture. The console can also be seen on it in black. However, due to the white back of the controller and the blue light on the console, it is suspected that it is a fake.
PS5: New accessories
The group also presented special peripherals for the console: an HD camera, a 3D audio headset, a charger for two controllers, and remote control will be on the shelves when the console is launched. According to a notice in the forum from the reset era, at least some of the accessories of the PlayStation 4 could also be compatible with the PlayStation 5.

PS5: These games are coming
But what uses is the most beautiful and most powerful console if the right games are missing? On the evening of June 11, 2020, Sony left no doubt that there will be no shortage of high-quality game food for buyers in the future. The company fired one trailer after the other for a good 70 minutes. Many of them already showed impressive in-game graphics. The highlights were undoubtedly the clips for “Resident Evil Village”, “Gran Turismo 7” and the “Horizon Zero Dawn” sequel “Horizon Forbidden West”. The bottom line is that Sony announced 26 titles that covered a decent range. The group served practically every genre at the event – the games come from both indie studios and AAA game manufacturers. Here is a general overview:
- Grand Theft Auto 5
- Spider-Man – Miles Morales
- Gran Turismo 7
- Ratchet Clank Rift Apart
- Project Asia
- Sackboy – A Big Adventure
- Destruction all-stars
The big surprises did not materialize, but Sony doesn’t have to hide from Microsoft’s “Halo Infinite” & Co. with this line-up. PS5-exclusive titles like “Horizon Forbidden West”, “Spider-Man – Miles Morales” and “Gran Turismo 7” each have what it takes to be a system seller. However, many of the potential hits shown are also coming onto the market for PC and Xbox Series X – on these platforms, for example, players can also scare themselves through the “Resident Evil Village” adventure.
PS5: the processor
What is actually in the console? Sony revealed the first technical key data for the console as early as mid-2019. Accordingly, the processor (CPU) of the new console is back to AMD. According to PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, a third-generation Ryzen chip with eight computing cores that is manufactured using the 7-nanometer process is used. As part of a live stream on March 18, 2020, Sony’s hardware architect Mark Cerny stated that the processor has a clock frequency of 3.5 gigahertz (GHz).
PS5: The graphics chip
The graphics unit (GPU) also comes from AMD (possibly an individualized version of the Radeon Navi series), it should come to performance value of 10.28 teraflops. For comparison: According to Microsoft, the Xbox Series X reaches 12 teraflops. But why is the value so important in terms of performance? Flops stands for “Floating Point Operations Per Second”. The specification describes how many calculations a processor does per second. The higher it is, the better. But there are other details that play a role in the performance of the console. This was also emphasized by Cerny during his lecture on March 18.
Among other things, the AMD Smartshift technology is supposed to ensure that the CPU of the PS5 supports the GPU in calculations if there are corresponding power reserves. Among other things, the graphics chip provides the computationally intensive ray tracing, which, according to game designer Mark Cerny, offers interesting possibilities beyond the creation of real lighting effects. Jim Ryan in turn confirmed that the PS5 can play games at 4K resolution with an optional refresh rate of 120 Hertz (Hz) – provided the television supports this technology. In addition, the device plays games with a resolution of up to 8K.
PS5: SSD storage
The super-fast, 825 gigabyte SSD storage device, which, according to Sony, overshadows everything that has existed so far, should also ensure speed. The comparison shows this clearly: While the PlayStation 4 needs around 20 seconds to load a data volume of 1 gigabyte (GB), the successor creates 2 GB within 0.27 seconds – a remarkable value, according to Cerny. This means, among other things, that loading times will practically no longer exist in the future and long booting when starting the PS5 is also a thing of the past. Cerny speaks of a maximum SSD bandwidth of 5.5 gigabytes per second.
PS5: AMD 3D sound
In the audio sector in particular, the PS5 should do a lot. According to Cerny, the AMD chip used supports 3D sound, which draws gamers deeper into the virtual world. The PS5 should be able to calculate up to 5,000 sound sources. Thanks to a sophisticated technology (Tempest Engine), players should know exactly where a noise is coming from while playing – and thus react more quickly to situations. In order to optimally design the process, the ears and auditory canals of each player should actually be measured.
Since that is not possible, Sony wants to offer various presets from which the gamer can choose the one that suits him. According to Cerny, the system works optimally when starting the console with conventional headphones. But in the medium term, the system is also to be optimized for TV speakers, boxes, and soundbars.
PS5: DualSense controller
Without much fanfare, Sony published details and images of the wireless DualSense controller on its blog in the late evening of March 7, 2020. Differences with the predecessor can be seen at first glance; the company has fundamentally changed the design, such as the color scheme. Instead of a monochrome look, the DualSense controller uses an interesting black and white mixture; later there may be other combinations. What is certain, however, is that the controller shakes more strongly.
Sony installed a new vibration unit. Anyone who is fouled in the future in the soccer simulation “FIFA”, for example, should feel this much more violently on the gamepad. The technical change should also make it easier to convey details of the virtual world haptically; it should make a difference, for example, whether you roll a car over asphalt, scree, or grass in a racing game.
